Concise history of the willage of Panenský Týnec

Panenský Týnec can be found on the plateaux of Džbánská Vysočina (highlands) and belongs to the highest located places in Louny District with its 360m above the sea level.

The borough is situated on an important road Prague to Leipzig called „Via regia“ in old manuscripts. The origin of Panenský Týnec is ancient and reaches into Halstadt, Lattain, German and Slavonic cultures which can be proved with several findings, the most important of which is a bronze buckle of a Roman provincial shape exhibited in the District Museum in Louny.

The name „Týnec“ is derived from the word „Týn“ or an old Celtic word „Taun“ which means „palisade-fortified“. The adjective „Panenský“ was later added according to maidens of the order of St. Claire from the local cloister. The first written mention of Týnec comes from 1115 and is related to Kladruby cloister and the village itself was mentioned in 1186.

The powerful house of Žirotín had a cardinal influence on the development of the borough. The first known representative of the house, Jan of Žirotín, allegedly built Žirotín Castle between 1230-1253. His son Habart founded and richly donated the newly-established cloister of the order of St. Claire as a thanksgiving because his wife nad been healed by Saint Agnes who represented and protected the order. We also suppose St. Agnes lived here at the end of her life. Members of the house of Žirotín intended to built a three-nave Gothic church that was not finisched unfortunately.

Týnec cloister sometimes witnesses good times thanks to Žirotíns´ donations, sometimes had hard times – in wars, fires, diseases and others troubles. In 1420 the nuns from Prague moved to Týnec to protect themselves from Hussites and wntr back to Agnes Cloister in Prague in 1640 – so they stayed in Týnec for 220 years. The dath of the last heir of the house of Žirotín, Jaroslav, in 1467, meant the end of Žirotíns´ era and the estate was ingerited by the house of Lobkowitz.

The cloister was rebuilt by the abbess Agnes of Litoměřice, the mention of which is chiselled out above the cloister entrance. During the Thirty Years´ War the borough was destroyed as well as the cloister.

One of the financial income of the cloister was the production and sale of favourite remedy called „Drops of St. Agnes“ until 1730. The nuns also intended to establish a school for poor girls. This intention was not realised because this purely Czech cloister was abolished upon the Emperor Joseph II´ s order from 26th June 1782. Rich archives in Týnec and Prague and lifraries containing jewels of old Bohemian literature and pictures were sold out in an auction.

Týnec estate was confiscated and sold to Jan Tuscany, a Prague citizen and merchant. Goods, raw materials and various products were imported and exported on the „Leipzig“ road. The then kings – Emperor František I, Prussian king Bedřich Vilém III and Russian tsar Alexander I met in Panenský Týnec on 19th August 1813.

The prosperity of the borough culminated then. The local transport, merchants and tradesmen flourisched. There was founded a post office here.

The estate was bought by Vojtěch Renner from Prague. Compulsory labour was abolisched at that time. After V. Renner died in 1871, jis sons sold the property to Countess Teresie of Herberstein who joined the estate to the original Žirotín estate after 512 years. This property was confiscated and difided between 1920-1921.

The borough had 861 inhabitants in 1846, 683 inhabitants in 1921 and there life about 380 people at present.

The Order of St. Claire Cloister – founded by Habart of Žirotín in 1280 as the third Franciscan cloister in Bohemia. Order nuns of the cloister of St. Agnes Premyslide from the Old Town Quarter were introduced here and St. Agnes, king Wenceslas I´s sister, lifed here till the end of her life.

Týnec cloister witnessed several catastrophes. It burnt down in 1382, the newly-built one survived until the Hussite Wars. „At that time, when Louny citizens destroyed heir own Dominican cloister and went to help Prague citizens against king Zikmund, they attacked Týnec cloister on their way, set it on fire and killed the nuns“ (the writer V. B. Třebízský mentioned this event in one of his stories). The brothers Jaroslav and Plichta of Žirotín repaired the destroyed cloister and protected it.

Unfinished cathedral – the architect Kamil Hilbert, a Louny citizen, surveyed the building in detail and expressed his opinion it belonged to Petr Parléř´s worshop which also built St. Vitus´ Cathedral in Prabue. Unfortunately, we will mot certainly know who built the cathedral but we know for sure and psychotronics proved the fact with their measurements that the cathedral is situated od a positivi zone. It has an ability to remove depressions, it can bring optimism, good mood, energy and joy. People suffering from manic-depressions, lack of self-confidence or hyper-sinsitive people are recommended to stay on the spot. The energy radiated here strengthens the self-defence of human body, repeated visits are recommended to people after cerebral palsy, brain stroke or other brain injuries.
